USPS quick to confirm Reagan stamp
July 2004

‘The Great Communicator’ to be honoured next year

The US Postal Service has announced that they will release a stamp next year honouring former President Ronald Reagan who died on Saturday.

The hugely popular figure had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease for ten years and died of pneumonia aged 93. The USPS will not be delivering regular mail on 11th June after President Bush issued an Executive Order directing federal government agencies to close for the day.

Ronald Reagan became President of the United States in 1981, succeeding Jimmy Carter who paid for the Iranian Hostage Crisis with his presidency. Noted for his charm and communication skills rather than his political skills, Reagan’s popularity soared after he survived an assassination attempt shortly after taking office.

The country enjoyed a long period of prosperity during the 1980s due to the Reagan administration’s economic policies. Reagan however will be best remembered by Americans for restoring confidence to the nation and for being in the right place at the right time when the Cold War ended.

 Classic Reagan Quotes

'Politics is not a bad profession. If you succeed there are many rewards, if you disgrace yourself you can always write a book'

'Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first.'

'You can tell a lot about a fellow's character by his way of eating jellybeans.'
